Aspen Rose Hogfeldt broke many hearts on October 1st, 2021 when she sadly passed away at PVH while a patient in the ICU. Aspen was born on January 15, 2003 with a debilitating condition referred to as Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. The joints in her tiny limbs were fixed and severely contractured; her body paralyzed from head to toe. To complicate matters even more, Aspen was incapable of breathing on her own and required the support of mechanical ventilation. The physicians caring for Aspen prepared her birth family to expect a shortened life for her. At best, these predictions are an educated conjecture. Who knew that the DNA of this fragile baby girl was comprised of courage, resiliency, and a fierce will power to live.
Aspen made it to her 1st birthday, her 2nd, her 3rd, and all the way to her 18th. There has always been so much to celebrate about Aspen. Her beaming, ear to ear smile and contagious belly laugh. Aspen’s personality was full of charisma, she made her likes & dislikes known, and she possessed an individuality that spoke to the world.
Aspen loved all things girly and sparkly. She loved having her nails painted in vibrant colors. She was a fashionista and liked to pick out her own clothes. What Aspen didn’t like was getting her teeth brushed or her long blonde locks brushed. She was very capable of the water works (tears) when it came to these care tasks.
Aspen loved listening to books on audio and watching “Yes to the Dress” on TV. Aspen really loved music. Her favorite musician was Taylor Swift. The crazier the beat, the bigger the smiles. Aspen was always ready to “Shake It Off” and loved her loud dance parties with her lively Peeps. When Aspen was 15 years old, she got to be Cinderella for a night. Her Prince was her handsome brother Paul. Aspen was absolutely enthralled as Paul spun and twirled her wheelchair on the Night to Shine dance floor. She literally never quit smiling that whole night and when it was bedtime, Cinderella must have been reminiscing about the night’s events because she didn’t fall asleep until the stroke of midnight.
From infancy to womanhood, preschool to graduation, Aspen had so many incredible people in her life. Her Village was enormous. She trusted YOU ALL explicitly. Your compassion, care, and respect gave Aspen the power she needed to keep soaring. To the remarkable folks at Tender Care Pediatric Services & Medical Supply, Inspiring Talkers, NuMotion, Certified, ToothZone, Brighter Future Vision, Fort Collins Youth Clinic, Children’s Hospital, Poudre Valley Hospital, KS Pharmacy, Foothills Gateway, and finally Thompson School District ... You were her BFF’s and submersed her life with so many Blessings!!!
Not only blessed with an earth full of friends Aspen also had the love of two families. The bravest yet most heart wrenching decision ever is that of giving up your child for adoption. Aspen birth parents grasped the complexity of her medical needs and have not only mourned her loss once but twice. Aspen is survived by her birth father Jeff, birth mother Sabrina, her stepfather and brothers, her grandma, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Aspen was preceded in death by her grandpa.
Aspen’s early journey into foster care landed her in the middle of a huge family. For Kevin and Debbie, it was a Ma-ma and Pa-pa’s love at first sight. Siblings Brianna, Liz, Heidi, and Paul instantly received Aspen into their hearts too. Those beginning days turned into weeks, then months, then years. The love between Aspen and her new family doubled, quadrupled, then shot to the moon and back. On July 20, 2007, Aspen was adopted and joined the family as a permanent, legal Hogfeldt aka Hoogie.
Aspen’s family also includes seven other adopted siblings who absolutely adored their sister-Julie, Jeremy, Ashley, Austin, Keyon, Atreyu, and Chance. Brother in laws Nelson, Tyler, and Dustan. Sister-in-law, Kylie. Nephews, Aiden, Keagen, Charle, Archer, Auron, Asher, and Hudson. And, niece, Emaleece Rose. Aspen was preceded in death by her three older adopted siblings David, Noah, and Cassidy.
A memorial service for Aspen will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Marks Funeral Chapel, 9293 Eastman Park Drive, Windsor, Colorado, 80550.
