Ernest (Winkie) Maxey, Jr., 74 of Windsor, CO entered into eternal rest Tuesday morning, Feb.7, 2023
surrounded by his loving family at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, CO.
He was born August 1, 1948, in Walterboro, SC. He was the son of the late Ernest (Sox) Maxey, Sr. and
Hazel Hiers Maxey. He graduated from Langley-Bath-Clearwater High School, Bath, SC in 1966 and then
joined the US Navy and was a Vietnam veteran. After the service he and his wife moved back to SC from
CA and he attended and graduated from August College, Augusta, GA with a BA in Psychology. He
worked for SC Electric & Gas and Glidden Paint Company before moving to Arlington, TX in 1980. There
he worked for Sherwin-Williams before starting his 39-year hospitality career with Motel 6 and ending
with KMI Management, Laramie, WY at the time of his death.
He was a member and Deacon of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Windsor, CO and started First Impressions
(greeting and coffee bar) there. He loved to sing and was a part of The Kingdom Seekers in SC and In His
Service Quartet in CO. He was an active Mason at the Belvedere Masonic Lodge, Belvedere, SC. He loved
sports and children. He was the founder and president of the Striker Soccer Club in Arlington, TX. After
moving to Windsor, CO in 2002 he coached rec soccer and was still known as Coach by some of his now
grown players. He was also known as Papa E by children that he loved dearly.
Surviving him are his loving wife of 55 years, Rhonda Swearingen Maxey of Windsor, CO, Sons: Dion and
his wife Anne Klinger Maxey and Brock and his wife Alexa Stanley Maxey all of Greeley, CO.
Grandchildren: Blake and his wife Saeka Matsunaga, Sarah, Ella, Carson, Chayse and Quinn Maxey all of
Greeley, CO. Sister: Ann Hooker of Walterboro, SC and Brother: Allan and his husband Ken Maxey of
Pocono Lake, PA Sister-in-law: Marlene Swearingen Crawford of Burnettown, SC and many nieces and
nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Sandra Maxey, Linda Carter and Kaye Quackenbush and a
brother, Jeff Maxey. Brother-in-laws: Paul Hooker and Thomas Crawford and a special cousin: Tommy
Hiers
Ernest and his family were blessed by the caring and compassion doctors: Dr Mack, Dr. Mikel, Dr Spannring
and Dr. Selby and the 5th floor nursing staff at the Medical Center of the Rockies.
