Dr. Gerald T. Cargo, age 93, died in Windsor, Colorado on November 10th 2023. Jerry was born in Dowagiac, MI. He attended the University of Michigan on a merit scholarship, graduating with his BBA (1st in his class), his master’s degree in mathematical statistics, and his doctorate in mathematics. He worked briefly for the National Security Agency as a cryptanalysis in 1953 before being drafted. From 1953 until 1955 he served in the U. S. Army’s 3rd Armored Division and was assigned to Aberdeen Proving Ground as a statistician for work associated with ENIAC. For thirty-nine years he enjoyed being a professor of mathematics at Syracuse University. He was a National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council Postdoctoral Research Associate at the National Bureau of Standards, a consultant at the Aerospace Research Laboratories at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and the author of numerous research papers. He was an active member of University United Methodist Church, an avid bicyclist & runner, a book collector (and voracious reader), a world traveler, and an International Folk Dancer. Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather with an inquiring mind and a sharp wit that will be sorely missed.
Jerry is survived by a son James (Mary) and a grandson Alex of Windsor, CO; and daughter Ellen Doersam (Dean) of Deep River, CT. He was predeceased by wife of 66 years, Barbara, his younger brother John Cargo, and his older brother, the Honorable David Cargo, former Governor of the State of New Mexico.
