Hal Schraeder

Hal Schraeder, 78, of Livermore, CO passed in peace on May 21st, 2019 at home with loved ones around him. He is now resting in the arms of his Lord. Has was born on Oct. 27th, 1940 to Sam and Katherine Schraeder in Windsor.

He graduated from CSU in 1961 and proceeded to a long, fulfilling career of service in the United States Air Force. In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Herbel who remained by his side more than 58 years later, until their Lord called him home. Hal was a loving father and playmate to Lonny Schraeder and Christine Schraeder. He is survived by his wife, Carol; Brother Wes Schraeder (Kathy) of Redding, CA, son Lonny (Missy), daughter Christine (Kari Stauffer); grandchildren Adam (Sarah), Kate (Brett Lee), Sarah, and Molly; great-grandchildren Griffin, Madelyn, and Avery. Hal was preceded in death by both of his parents and two brothers, Kenneth Schraeder and Tommy Schraeder.

Hal Schraeder was born in Bracewell, on October 27, 1940. He was the third of four sons for Sam and Kate Schraeder. His older brothers were Kenneth and Wes, and his younger brother was Tommy. Hal grew up at Bracewell Elementary School and graduated from high school in Windsor. He helped work the family farm, played in the high school band as first trumpet, and played on the high school football team. Hal started college at Colorado State University in 1958 and graduated in ROTC. In 1960, Hal married his high school sweetheart Carol Herbel.

Hal and Carol welcomed their son Lonny in 1961 and their daughter Christine in 1963. He graduated from CSU in 1962 and entered the Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. He was sent to Lubbock, TX where he flew T-33 and T-38 planes. Afterwards the Schraeders were stationed in Phoenix, AZ where Hal flew F-100s. In Blytheville, Arkansas Hal flew B-52 bombers. Then in 1968, Hal was sent to Vietnam where he flew O-1 and O-2 Birddogs (reconnaissance and forward air control). While he served in Vietnam, Carol served stateside, keeping their family intact.

After returning from Vietnam, the family was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone where Hal flew A-37 attack fighters. Subsequent assignments included Clovis, New Mexico and Alamogordo, New Mexico where Hal was an instructor pilot for T-38 training fighter jets. Then Hal was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska where he flew F-4 Phantom jets. His last post was at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, where Hal was the Air Force-Army liaison.
After a distinguished 23-year career serving his country in the Air Force, Hal retired from the military and moved his family to Ft. Collins where he could spend time with his extended family. He worked at Woodward Governor as a technical writer, and the OSHA and EPA compliance officer

Hal had an outstanding military career, but he is better known as a loving husband to Carol, father to Lonny (Missy) and Chris (Kari Stauffer), and “Peeps” to grandchildren Adam (Sarah McGrath), Kate (Brett Lee), Sarah, and Molly and to great-grandchildren Madelyn, Griffin, and Avery. He enjoyed his 7-acre spread in the Rocky Mountains where he loved working in the yard, making cedar chests in his shed, riding ATVs, fishing, and taking pictures and movies of his family. He loved playing horseshoes, marbles, pool, and croquet. Hal loved his God and his church family, his family, and his country. His legacy continues as his family gathers to celebrate his life and to remember the good times. Dad was loved, and he will be missed.

A celebration of Hal’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 29th, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E Stuart St, Fort Collins, CO 80525.
