James Riley Patterson, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on November 30, 2023, in Windsor, CO. He was born on March 24, 1936, in Burk Burnett, TX. James was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of many with his larger-than-life personality and kind heart.
James began his professional journey at IBM in Boulder, CO and later moved to Charlotte, NC. He dedicated an impressive 35 years to the company before retiring at the age of 59. His diligence and commitment to his work left a lasting impact on those he worked with.
Outside of his career, James had a passion for education. He graduated from Freer High School and valued the importance of learning throughout his life.
During the Korean War, James proudly served in the Navy for three years. His military service was a testament to his patriotism and dedication to his country.
James had an extraordinary ability to make friends wherever he went; he never met a stranger. His friendly nature allowed him to create connections all over the United States and beyond. Whenever James entered a room, it would light up with his presence. He had an infectious charisma that made everyone feel valued and loved.
One of James' greatest joys in life was his family. He cherished his children and grandchildren immensely. They brought him immeasurable happiness throughout his life.
In addition to his career and familial responsibilities, James had diverse hobbies and interests. He indulged in collecting old beer cans and bottles as well as various types of breweriana. At the height of his collection, he amassed over 10,000 beer cans—an impressive testament to his passion for brewing culture.
Active involvement in clubs was another source of pride for James. He dedicated himself to organizations such as the Atlantic Chapter of Beer Breweriana (North Carolina), Mile Hi Chapter of Beer and Breweriana (Denver, CO), American Breweriana Association, Brewery Collectables Club of America, Papst Beer Chapter, BCCA, American Legion (Longmont, CO), and the Elks Club (Longmont, CO). Furthermore, James served as a board member of the Columbine Chapter of Beer and Breweriana in Northern CO.
James will be deeply missed by his surviving family and friends. He is survived by Cynthia (Mark) Sandifer of Windsor, CO; Craig Loomiller of Disney, OK; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; Bob Patterson of Tuscon, AZ; and Monty Patterson of Victoria, TX.
James was preceded in death by his father Horace Patterson, mother Freda Patterson, brother Mike Patterson, and wife Shirley Drury Patterson .
A Celebration of Life service will be held on December 20, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Chapel Windsor located at 805 Compassion Dr, Windsor, CO 80550. The service will begin at 10:00 am with a reception following.
James Riley Patterson will be remembered for his vibrant personality and unwavering kindness. His love for life left an indelible mark on all who knew him. May his memory live on in the hearts of those he touched.
