Steve was born July 4, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland to Elsie Adams and Harley Pickering. His dad was an airplane mechanic for Martin Marietta. They lived on or near air force bases while he was growing up. He even lived in Kaufbeuren, Germany for his early teen years. He graduated from Alameda High School, class of 1961.
After graduation he had a job as an ambulance driver. During this time he shared a house with some guys that he worked with. It turns out that a beautiful redhaired girl lived next door. Her name was Mary Lou. They fell in love and were married April 13, 1963.
Steve went to work for the United State Geological Survey as a topographer. He received many awards for his map drawing skills. He worked there until his retirement.
Steve and Mary Lou had two daughters: Kimberly and Sheri. They lived in Arvada, Colorado. The family enjoyed many four-wheeling and camping adventures. Steve loved to show his three girls the beautiful places in America that he discovered while drawing his maps.
In 1996 Steve and Mary Lou’s granddaughter Aubrey was born. They were over the moon with joy. Then Lauren and Jessie arrived two years later. Steve and Mary Lou adored these girls and loved being their grandparents.
Steve was a gifted artist. He painted in oils and water colors; sketched; and enjoyed photography. Fall was his favorite time to explore the Rocky Mountains for the perfect shots. He passed his artistic talents on to his daughters and granddaughters.
Steve lost his best friend and wife in 2007. He was devastated. He lived on for sixteen more years but was never the same without her. He went home to be with his Savior on October 9, 2023. We know that Mary Lou was waiting there for him and now they have all of eternity for new adventures together.
Steve is preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, brother and sister.
